Why Lampard's contract talks at Chelsea will fail

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard will face an uphill battle to retain players like Willian, Giroud, and Pedro.

Recently in an interview, Lampard expressed his desire to sort out their expiring contracts but as things stand, all three players are set to leave the club for free at the end of this season.

Chelsea boss Lampard had told the club’s official website: “We have big players in that position so that’s obviously something I’m looking at very carefully.

“The ones out of contract here have been great servants for the club and actually have a lot of feeling for the club.

“But of course they will be concerned about themselves in terms of how they are now, and if pre-season is rushed they’ll want to make sure they’re alright.

“So it’s going to have to be something we look at. Hopefully, we can have that arrangement so they can stay with us because if we play again I would love the squad to look as it’s looked all season, but we’ll have to see how that works.”

With all due to respect to Frank’s wishes, sadly that is not how things work at Chelsea. Frank himself has been a victim of the age culture at the club where players above 30 are looked at as have-been rather than experienced campaigners.

Willian honestly has demanded the sky and so it would be okay if Chelsea cannot convince him but for Giroud, the death of his contract has long been in the making. The Frenchman is a committed professional but has rather been looked over both in terms of play time and respect at the club when it came to his contract.

He might be forced to stay if Chelsea triggers an extension on his contract. However, otherwise, we can very well see all 3 of them leave the club.
