Chelsea continue to be linked with Kai Havertz and Mathew Upson has outlined exactly why they need to get the deal done.
Frank Lampard has already strengthened his attack with Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to replace departing duo of Willian and Pedro.
Havertz is the next on his list of impressive attacking talents who could transcend Chelsea’s status as title challengers next season. Upson believes the German’s arrival would a huge statement to the rivals. He said, “That would have the biggest impact on their team getting better.”
However, Upson was also keen to point out that Chelsea’s struggles will continue without reinforcing their backline. The game against Sheffield United showed exactly where the Blues are the most incompetent, letting in the most number of goals in the top half of the table. Upson added, “If they want to compete for the title, it is an area they have to get sorted out.”
Havertz would no doubt, be a wonderful addition for the long-term future but it will make Chelsea a bit top heavy. Lampard is due to be firmly supported in the transfer market but fans are questioning his scouting. Clearly, the Blues need to address key areas like the left-back and centre-half spots.
While a partnership of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen has looked decent, the two are far from being the best out there. Chelsea could troddle down the same path like Liverpool in their search for glory – a feeble defence messing up their seasonal aspirations.
