Anthony Martial’s contract was recently extended by another year by his club Manchester United but this news spells joy than doom for Chelsea.
It would seem in normal situations that a player’s extension of contract at a club would mean that any other club interested in securing his services should lose hope.
However, with the case of Anthony Martial it is not quite the same. The exciting French winger had an initial contract with United which was supposed to be end next summer but United had the clause t extend it by another year if they felt like it.
Now in normal situations when a contract is extended, it is usually done for a longer spell, specially for young stars like Martial. The fact that United failed to convince Martial to do that and hence had to trigger their one year extension clause so as to keep him at the club would mean that all is not well with Martial at United.
Speaking to French radio, Philippe Lamboley, the player’s agent, said the two sides are very far apart in their negotiations over a new deal:
“I am very pessimistic about discussions going positively. They have already sent us offers that do not meet our expectations, starting on bases very far from our wishes. We are far from agreement, for the time being.”
This would mean for Chelsea they could be set to swoop in on the Frenchman should things stay the way they are!
