Chelsea have been dealt a major blow as defender Wesley Fofana has been ruled out for the remainder of the season, according to Telegraph journalist Matt Law.
Major Setback for Chelsea: Wesley Fofana Out for the Season
The 23-year-old Frenchman has suffered yet another injury, continuing a frustrating pattern that has plagued his Stamford Bridge career.
Fofana, who started the 2024/25 campaign as a first-choice centre-back alongside Levi Colwill, had only just returned to action before the international break.
He featured in the 1-0 win over Leicester City and the narrow 1-0 defeat to Arsenal, offering hope that his injury woes were behind him.
However, his absence from the squad in Chelsea’s midweek win over Tottenham raised concerns — and now those fears have been confirmed.
Chelsea have stated that Fofana picked up a muscle injury in training, and it’s serious enough to keep him sidelined for the final two months of the season.
It’s another cruel setback for a player whose time in west London has been blighted by fitness issues.
Since his £75 million move from Leicester City in 2022, Fofana has struggled to maintain a consistent run of games. His most significant injury came during the 2023/24 pre-season, when he tore his ACL and missed the entire campaign.
This season, he has made 14 appearances, clocking 1176 minutes, before this latest blow.
In total, Fofana has managed just 34 appearances in nearly three years at Chelsea, despite earning a reported £200,000 per week.
While his talent is undeniable, his lack of availability is becoming a growing concern for the club’s hierarchy and new head coach Enzo Maresca.
With Fofana sidelined, Maresca will now turn to Colwill, Trevoh Chalobah, Benoit Badiashile, and academy prospect Josh Acheampong as he looks to navigate Chelsea through a crucial end to the season.
The Blues remain in the hunt for a Champions League spot and are pushing for silverware in the Europa Conference League.
Fofana’s return to form will have to wait — once again.
