Reporter Pete O’Rourke has revealed that Tottenham Hotspur is contemplating a summer transfer for Chelsea defender Renato Veiga. Since Cristian Romero’s future in North London is uncertain, the Lilywhites are searching for a new center-back this summer and are rumored to have considered Veiga.
According to reports, Chelsea wants to make a quick profit on the Portuguese international this summer and is asking for about £30 million, which is more than twice as much as the £12 million they spent on Basel for him last year.
Veiga is on loan at Juventus for the second half of the season, but it is unlikely that he would stay in Italy because the January deal with Chelsea did not include a buyout option. O’Rourke believes Tottenham’s chances of acquiring Veiga this summer are slim because Chelsea rarely deals with their bitter London rivals.
Goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini joined Spurs on a free transfer in 2009, marking the last time a senior player switched teams. Ever since joining Juventus in January, the ‘amazing’ 20-year-old has started seven games in Serie A and one in the Champions League.
Chelsea to consider offers for Renato Viega
Consequently, at the end of the current season, Ange Postecoglou’s squad may have to make a trade. They have now made Chelsea defender Renato Veiga their new target, according to a Football Insider report.
As Romero is believed to be the most likely center-back to leave N17 this summer, Spurs are thinking about making a bid for Veiga, who could be available for as little as £30 million this summer.
Tottenham faces an issue as the Blues, who paid just £12 million for the 21-year-old, are hoping to turn a quick profit on him. However, there are questions about whether they would consider selling him to their fierce rivals.
Not only that, but the Lilywhites may not be willing to shell out £30m for a player who has only featured sporadically for both Chelsea and loan club Juventus this season. Veiga’s fine form at Juventus will surely tempt the Italian giants to sign him permanently, while one imagines other clubs will have noticed his potential.
