Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly has addressed the club’s recent transfer strategies, particularly the decision not to secure a marquee striker, despite previous interest in Napoli’s Victor Osimhen.

Todd Boehly on Chelsea’s striker search: “It’s Not Like Buying Groceries”

During the summer transfer window, Chelsea pursued Osimhen but couldn’t finalize terms with Napoli.

The Nigerian forward eventually joined Galatasaray on a season-long loan after being sidelined under Napoli’s then-manager, Antonio Conte.

Reflecting on the challenges of acquiring top-tier strikers, Boehly remarked,

“Strikers are hard to find. You don’t go into the grocery store and say, ‘I am going to get a striker’.

It is an amazing skillset and you have to have the right mentality.”

Initially, Chelsea’s decision seemed justified as Nicolas Jackson showcased impressive form.

However, a subsequent eight-match goal drought culminated in a hamstring injury during a match against West Ham earlier this month.

Compounding the team’s challenges, Marc Guiu sustained an injury in the same game, and Christopher Nkunku struggled when positioned as the leading striker.

These setbacks prompted head coach Enzo Maresca to deploy Pedro Neto as a temporary No.9 in recent fixtures.

Boehly, speaking at the FT Business of Football Summit, emphasized the club’s long-term vision and the complexities inherent in transfer dealings.

“You have to have a strategy, and you have to be patient,” he stated.

“Football is a dynamic and unpredictable sport; building a cohesive team requires time and thoughtful planning.”

Since assuming ownership in 2022, Boehly and his consortium have invested approximately £1.2 billion in new talent, acquiring over 40 players and offering extended contracts to key individuals.

Despite this significant outlay, the club has faced mixed results, finishing 12th and 6th in the Premier League in consecutive seasons. Recent performances have also been inconsistent, leading to vocal dissatisfaction from the fanbase.

Addressing the supporters’ concerns, Boehly acknowledged the challenges of meeting diverse expectations.

“Criticism is par for the course,” he commented.

“We understand the fans’ passion and desire for success. Our commitment remains unwavering, and we’re focused on building a dynasty that reflects Chelsea’s esteemed history.”

As the season progresses, Chelsea aims to overcome its offensive challenges and align its on-field performances with the ambitious vision set forth by its ownership.
