Thiago Silva has earned his manager’s praise after settling in seamlessly at Chelsea.
The veteran defender has not only come for free last summer but he seems to have influenced the team greatly.
Despite not speaking much of English, Lampard holds long conversations with Silva before games and tries to get more of his input. The Blues boss was more than pleased with his performance against Sheffield United with was topped off with a headed goal from Silva.
Lampard said, “He’s been brilliant: his level of performance since he’s been here, without much of a pre-season, his influence on the group, his individual performance, his preparation between games, how he attacks training, and how diligently he looks at opposition when we are having meetings.
“He wants to know so I have plenty of conversations with him pre-game. And then he gets his goal. He’s had a big influence since he’s been here.”
Not a lot of fans had given Silva the vote of confidence heading into the current season. Chelsea were expected to make more convincing signings to shore up their defence but settled on the former PSG man.
Just over a month into the campaign, we can all see why. Clearly, Silva’s age is not a direct indication of his footballing abilities. The 36-year-old still has plenty left in the tank and could really help Chelsea move towards their objectives this campaign.
