Chelsea’s academy product Tammy Abraham has told manager Frank Lampard that he is ready to take the number 9 shirt at Stamford Bridge. The youngster recently netted his first preseason goal against Barcelona in a 2-1 victory at the Nou Camp.

“I’m honoured to wear the No 9 at Chelsea. I spoke to the manager and he asked me if I was ready to take it. I said, “Yeah, I’m ready”. I’m glad he offered it to me. I’ve heard all the rubbish about the No 9, but I’m here to play my game and do my best.”

“Football brings a lot of pressure. It drives me on. It gives me the extra belief. It was my first goal in a Chelsea shirt and now that’s out of the way it will be nice to push on and score some more.”

The number 9 shirt is known to bring ill luck to all the strikers who have worn it. The long list includes Radamel Falcao, Fernando Torres, Alvaro Morata, Chris Sutton, Gonzalo Higuain and Chris Sutton, who failed to make their mark at the club while wearing the kit number.

The Englishman spent the past three years on loan at Swansea, Bristol and Aston Villa. His 25-goal haul for Villa in the league helped them gain promotion to the Premier League this season.

With Chelsea suffering a transfer ban, the 21-year-old is set to play a crucial role in the forward line at Stamford Bridge.
