Chelsea have struck a £15 million deal to sign Jadon Sancho on loan from Manchester United for the 2024-25 season.
According to finance expert Stefan Borson, the deal represents a smart piece of business by Chelsea, given the significantly higher fee United paid for the winger just three years ago.
Sancho, who joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund in 2021 for £73 million, has struggled to live up to expectations at Old Trafford.
After a much-publicized fallout with Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag last season, the 24-year-old was sent back to Dortmund on loan in January.
Now, Chelsea are betting on the winger rediscovering his form at Stamford Bridge under Chelsea new manager Enzo Maresca.
The loan deal reportedly includes an obligation for Chelsea to buy Sancho at the end of the season for a fee between £20-25 million.
Chelsea will cover the majority of Sancho’s wages, which are believed to be around £250,000 per week.
However, as Borson pointed out, Chelsea will not be paying a loan fee, meaning the overall cost for the season comes in at an estimated £15 million.
For Chelsea, this deal could prove a bargain if Sancho rediscovers the form that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young players during his time in the Bundesliga.
As Borson noted, while the deal comes with financial risks due to Sancho’s wages, the relatively low transfer fee and potential upside make it a calculated gamble for the Blues.
All eyes will now be on whether Sancho can thrive in London after a tumultuous spell at United.
