The midfield player Lesley Ugochukwu from Chelsea has officially joined Southampton on a season-long loan. Southampton is in early talks to recruit Ugochukwu, according to a report from The Athletic on Thursday. As Ugochukwu is seen by Chelsea as a long-term player, the agreement does not include a buyout option.
After spending almost 30 million euros (33.08 million USD) to join Chelsea from Stade Rennes in France last year, the 20-year-old has made 15 appearances for the West London team. Rennes Academy alumnus Ugochukwu made his first appearance for the first team in 2021 and participated in 60 games overall.
The France under-21 international stated in a statement, “Southampton have a great history.” “I’m thrilled to be a member of the Southampton team now, as many amazing players have come here to play. The choice was really simple.
Lesley Ugochukwu explains decision to join Southampton on loan
In his first interview with the Saints, he stated: “Last season, I suffered an ailment that prevented me from playing. I wanted to play more minutes and gain more experience this season.” I mentioned that joining Southampton is a fantastic chance for me to showcase my abilities. Rennes gave me the chance to play in the Champions League.
“I participated in a few Europa League games. I’ve worked in a few different capacities. I really like (the play’s) style. I enjoy having the ball. I saw the team’s performance from the previous season; they are a possession-based team.
That’s what I prefer, and I feel like it fits me really well. I’m quite happy with this. I’m excited to visit the stadium, greet the supporters, and see the boys.”
