Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri has heaped praise on young Ethan Ampadu.

The young defender/ defensive midfielder played a full ninety minutes in the Europa League clash against Vidi last night. Although Ampadu was unfortunate to score an own goal, Sarri feels Ampadu was unlucky to score the own goal and was otherwise extremely impressive in his outing for Chelsea.

“The goal was not the fault of Ampadu. We were zonal marking, and at no point did we touch the ball in advance of the first zone, which is really a very big problem, so it’s not the fault of Ampadu.

“Ampadu played a very good match, especially against a team like this. We need to consider that if Ampadu played in the usual team, it would be easier for him. Today we changed 10 players. It’s not easy for the young players to play in a new team like the one in this match.

Ampadu recently turned 18 and is considered to be a key part of Chelsea’s future. The versatile youngster can slot in as a centre back or a holding midfielder depending on his team’s requirements and is technically gifted.

It remains to be seen whether Ampadu has impressed his boss enough to earn more playing time with a string of matches coming up over the next few weeks.
