Manchester United legend Roy Keane has launched a scathing critique of Cole Palmer, questioning the Chelsea star’s ability to elevate England to a trophy-winning level.
Roy Keane Questions Cole Palmer’s Impact and Habits After England Withdrawal
Keane’s comments came just before the Three Lions suffered a 3-2 defeat to Spain, a match Palmer missed after withdrawing from Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Keane expressed doubts about Palmer’s overall influence. “I like Palmer, he’s a talented boy, but he’s got far too many bad habits for me,” Keane stated.
The pundit dismissed the idea that the 24-year-old will bring England to another level, referencing Palmer’s recent performance in Chelsea’s 3-0 loss to Brentford.
Palmer’s withdrawal sparked significant debate. It marks the second time he has pulled out of a Tuchel-led squad since 2025.
While Palmer described his absence as load management, citing that he “had one leg for ten months,” he has started six of Chelsea’s seven competitive games this season.
This contrasts with fellow withdrawals Kobbie Mainoo and Marcus Rashford, whom Tuchel defended as playing through discomfort for their clubs.
Tuchel also warned Palmer about his international output before the Spain match, noting that the player misses “too many opportunities.”
Despite the criticism, Tuchel stated he trusts his players, referencing their previous performances in the United States.
The situation highlights growing tension between club workloads and national team duties.
While Palmer manages his fitness in London, Keane’s comments suggest that consistency and discipline remain critical for the attacker to realize his potential on the international stage.
England ultimately fell to Spain without him.
