Paul Merson Backs Nicolas Jackson Over Christopher Nkunku as Chelsea’s Main Striker
Paul Merson has thrown his support behind Nicolas Jackson in Chelsea’s ongoing debate over who should lead the attack, preferring the young forward over Christopher Nkunku for the starting striker role.
Chelsea’s striking options have become a hot topic this season, with both Jackson and Nkunku vying for the No.9 spot.
Manager Enzo Maresca has indicated that the two players are direct competitors for the central striker position, making it a crucial decision for Chelsea’s attacking line-up.
Jackson, 23, has hit the ground running in the Premier League, netting four goals in just five appearances. He’s shown flashes of brilliance, with his finishing against West Ham earning praise.
Merson believes Chelsea are right to back the Senegalese forward, citing his youthful energy and the experience he gained last season when Chelsea lacked depth up front.
“Nkunku’s hat-trick in midweek was great, but it came against Barrow. Jackson’s proving himself in tougher league games,” Merson told Sportskeeda.
“His finishing is only going to improve with time.”
Nkunku, meanwhile, has also made a big impact with six goals across all competitions this season.
While Merson recognizes Nkunku’s talent, he leans toward Jackson for now, seeing him as the more reliable choice for Premier League fixtures.
Despite the competition, some fans are wondering if both players could be used together.
While Jackson excels as an out-and-out striker, Nkunku’s versatility could see him drop deeper into a No.10 role if needed, creating an exciting dynamic for Chelsea’s attack.
