Paul Merson Blasts Chelsea’s Long-Term Deal for Cole Palmer

In a move that has left football pundits scratching their heads, Chelsea handed their star midfielder Cole Palmer a staggering nine-year contract extension, binding him to the club until 2033.

While the Blues celebrate securing their prodigious talent, former Arsenal legend Paul Merson isn’t convinced.

Palmer, 22, dazzled fans and critics alike in the 2023/24 season, notching up an impressive 25 goals and 15 assists in 45 appearances following his £42.5 million transfer from Manchester City.

His stellar performances earned him the Premier League Young Player of the Year award and saw him shine for England at Euro 2024.

Expressing his joy, Palmer remarked,

I’m delighted to sign this new deal. I achieved a lot in my first season here and hopefully, I can continue to experience great things at this club, both on a personal level and in terms of bringing success and trophies to Chelsea.”

However, Merson, known for his candid opinions, didn’t hold back on Sky Sports.

“This can’t be a better deal for the club,” he asserted. When fellow pundit Clinton Morrison questioned the rationale behind such a lengthy contract, Merson retorted, “Because they don’t know what they’re doing!”

He elaborated,

“You’re talking about nine years’ time! How can you tell how he’s going to be in nine years? He’s had an unbelievable season, but every team will now focus on stopping Cole Palmer. Giving him a nine-year contract? It’s ludicrous.”

Drawing parallels, Merson highlighted the case of Joao Cancelo.

“Three years ago at Manchester City, Cancelo was phenomenal. But a year later, he was gone. You can’t predict how players will fare in six or seven years.”

Yet, amidst his criticism, Merson acknowledged Palmer’s talent.

“If I were him, I would’ve signed that deal. Oh my God! But next season will be tougher. If he gets 15 goals, I’ll say, ‘Wow, fair play to you.'”

As Chelsea gears up for the upcoming season, eyes will undoubtedly be on Palmer to see if he can replicate—or even surpass—his previous exploits.

Only time will tell if this long-term commitment pays dividends for the Blues.
