Following a disappointing home defeat to newly-promoted Sunderland, pundit Paul Merson has claimed that Chelsea are desperately missing the presence of striker Liam Delap.

Merson: Chelsea Desperately Need Injured Delap Back to Fix Attack

The Blues fell to a 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge, a performance that highlighted their ongoing struggles in front of goal.

While the continued absence of Cole Palmer due to a groin issue has been a major talking point, Merson believes the lack of a focal point up front is a more pressing concern.

Merson pointed to the performance of Marc Guiu, who made his first Premier League start against Sunderland, as evidence of the problem.

He stated to Sky Sports, “They need Delap back badly, they need a focal point. Guiu played up front and I think he touched the ball nine, ten times.

You can’t do that in a team that are supposed to be dominating the ball.”

Delap has been sidelined since suffering an injury in the third game of the season against Fulham.

His absence has been keenly felt, especially after his dominant display against West Ham just a week prior to his setback.

In his place, Joao Pedro has shouldered most of the striking duties, but he often appears more effective in a deeper role.

There is, however, positive news on the horizon for manager Enzo Maresca. He has confirmed that Delap has resumed training with the first team at Cobham.

Although the striker was not ready for the Sunderland match, his return to the pitch is now imminent.

Chelsea will likely exercise caution, meaning the upcoming EFL Cup tie against Wolves may come too soon.

This sets the stage for a potential return in the crucial league clash against London rivals Tottenham, a match where having their primary striker available could prove decisive for the Blues.
