Cole Palmer blamed Chelsea’s disastrous Champions League comeback in Bavaria on their inability to manage the big moments. The Blues, making their first appearance in the competition since 2023, suffered a crushing 3-1 loss to Bayern Munich.
Trevoh Chalobah’s regrettable own goal and Harry Kane’s double clinched a well-earned victory for the German powerhouses, disappointing Enzo Maresca’s team at the Allianz Arena.
In the first half, Palmer, the outstanding player for Chelsea, scored the only goal for his club. Palmer put out an attempt, his second in four days after scoring in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Brentford, but it was unable to change the outcome.
In an open post-game interview, Palmer identified the precise moment when the Blues’ struggle came to a head. The England ace highlighted his team’s inability to focus and properly manage critical play parts.
“Yeah [frustrating],” Palmer stated in an interview with TNT Sports. More was due to us. We had early opportunities and got off to a strong start, but it’s challenging when you make mistakes at the greatest level.
Cole Palmer points out Chelsea’s fault
Palmer feels that the Blues put on a show that demonstrated they can play against the greatest teams in the tournament, even if they openly acknowledge that their mistakes led to their defeat versus Bayern. Chelsea intends to compete in the Champions League, the 23-year-old added, instead of viewing the season as a learning curve.
“We performed nicely, in my opinion. We have proven that we are worthy of playing here. We were responsible for the three goals we gave up. We had opportunities. What we received was not what we deserved. We got off to a good start.
We had early scoring opportunities, but it’s never easy to get back into the game after defensive errors. It was a failure to focus and improperly manage the moments. We have shown our ability to compete with the top clubs in the league, in my opinion.
“Before the game, the manager told us that he knew we could compete head-to-head. Regardless of the outcome, I believe we demonstrated that. It’s good to be back in the competition; now we just need to keep going. We’re not here to experience a learning curve. We’d want to compete.
