Chelsea have completed the signing of former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson on a free transfer, with the midfielder penning a two-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

The 36-year-old arrives in west London after leaving Brentford by mutual agreement, despite having one year remaining on his contract with the Bees. The club announced his departure last week.

Henderson brings a wealth of experience to Xabi Alonso’s squad, having won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup during his illustrious 12-year spell at Liverpool, where he made 492 appearances.
“I was so impressed with how much the ownership want Chelsea to be successful and move in the right direction,”
Henderson told the club’s official media channels. “Given the size of the club, the manager, who I have great admiration for, and the quality of the players, this was a huge opportunity I couldn’t turn down.”
The England international added: “For me, it’s about giving everything every single day, both on and off the field, to help the players around me and the team as much as possible. I’m very excited to get going.”
Henderson becomes Chelsea’s eighth summer arrival in a busy transfer window, following Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Danny Welbeck and England teammate Morgan Rogers through the door at Stamford Bridge.
The new signings will play under another new name at the club: manager Xabi Alonso, who has taken charge following a successful spell at Bayer Leverkusen.
The 36-year-old spent just one season at Brentford after joining from Ajax in July 2025, making 32 Premier League appearances for the club.
His move to the Gtech Community Stadium marked a return to English football’s top flight following a brief stint in Saudi Arabia.
After departing Liverpool, Henderson spent half a season at Saudi Pro League side Al Ettifaq, playing under former teammate Steven Gerrard before joining Ajax and then Brentford.
Upon confirmation of Henderson’s exit from Brentford, manager Keith Andrews said:
“Taking into consideration Jordan’s ambitions and where our squad is currently, we both felt it was the right time for Jordan to pursue his career elsewhere.”
The experienced midfielder now looks to bring his leadership qualities and winning mentality to a Chelsea side aiming to challenge for major honours under Alonso’s guidance.
