Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea has reached an agreement to sign Valentin Barco, a midfielder for Strasbourg. One of the worst-kept secrets in football was revealed by the Italian transfer insider: Barco, an Argentina international, announced earlier this week that he was leaving BlueCo’s sister club, Strasbourg, and is currently en route to Chelsea.
The 21-year-old just had a stellar season. Liam Rosenior, the former Racing manager, transformed Barco from a left-back into a midfielder and attempted to sign him with Chelsea. Despite Rosenior’s dismissal in April, Stamford Bridge will welcome his old protégé. Romano claims that Barco, Chelsea, and Strasbourg have reached an undisclosed agreement for the midfield player to relocate to West London.
According to the Italian, the move would be officialised the following month. Barco is now awaiting word on whether he will be included in Argentina’s World Cup team, which has not yet been revealed.
Chelsea agrees to a deal to sign Valentin Barco
This is precisely the type of action that most describes Chelsea’s haphazard hiring practices in recent years. Although Barco is a gifted player, Chelsea does not have an issue that he can address. This side already has the ability to create opportunities at will. The figures and performances demonstrate that creativity is not the problem.
The true issues are elsewhere. They lack a cutting edge in broad areas and are weak defensively. Chelsea are once again pursuing a player who fits a trend rather than a necessity, rather than fixing those obvious flaws. The pattern is recognisable. accumulating unnecessary talent while disregarding the team’s backbone.
An experienced, dominant center back who can provide structure and leadership is what this team sorely needs. They also want a vicious left winger who can take on his opponent and often convert opportunities into goals. Such actions will continue to feel misplaced until the Blues begin to prioritise need above innovation.
