OFFICIAL: Aston Villa announce signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea

The Toffees are understood to have forked out a fee of £37.5m to sign Maatsen.

Chelsea finally gives final confirmation of the departure of one defender. Aston Villa have announced the signing of Dutch full-back Ian Maatsen on a permanent deal.

The 22-year-old will sign a new contract on a six-year contract. It will keep him at Aston Villa until the summer of 2030. Maatsen was on loan at Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund. He made 16 appearances in the German top-flight. He has scored two goals and featured seven times in the Champions League.

Dortmund were keen to sign the Dutchman on a permanent basis following a successful loan spell, but their offer fell short of the his original release clause.

The Chelsea full-back had a £35m release clause in his contract which expired earlier this month. The Toffees are understood to have forked out a fee of £37.5m to sign Maatsen. He becomes Villa’s second signing of the summer transfer window after the arrival of Lewis Dobbin from Everton.

He is currently playing in the Euro Championship in Germany. He made a total of 16 first-team appearances for the Blues, including his senior debut back in September 2019.
