According to Caught Offside, Newcastle United has begun talks to recruit Chelsea defender Axel Disasi this summer. The Magpies are hoping to bolster their roster for manager Eddie Howe this summer. The lone first-team addition to date is winger Anthony Elanga, who joined from Nottingham Forest for £55 million.
Fabian Schar and Dan Burn are both over 33, and the Toon wants to strengthen their defense as well. They are worried about the long-term fitness of Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles, so they have decided to bring someone in.
Journalist Rahman Osman has called Disasi a “monster.” Disasi found first-team opportunities at Stamford Bridge under Enzo Maresca restricted; thus, he spent the second half of the 2024–25 season on loan with Aston Villa.
Given that Newcastle has already started talks to sign the France international, moving to St. James’ Park is reportedly one of those choices. Chelsea has put his asking price at £30 million, but the Magpies are hoping to cut it to about £26 million.
Axel Disasi targeted by Newcastle
A summer transfer to St. James’ Park might help the Frenchman swiftly regain his best form, even though his move to Chelsea hasn’t gone quite as planned. There, the 6’3 defender might provide Sven Botman and Fabian Schar with an immediate challenge before eventually taking the place of the aging latter.
Last season, Disasi finally got some much-needed playing time while on loan at Aston Villa. He made occasional impressions and started to live up to the defender’s previous praise from U23 scout Antonio Mango, who called him exceptional.
Newcastle should view a deal for under £26 million as an outstanding value for a defender who should be playing at the top of his game at the age of 27.
Newcastle has previously named Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini their top target since they are eager to add a central defender to the team, but their valuations differ significantly from that of the Serie A team.
They are now in intensive negotiations with Disasi, but they are also expressing interest in Valencia’s Cesar Tarrega and Juventus’ Nicolo Savona as potential candidates.
