Chelsea are now securely in the Boehly-Clearlake Capital period.

Newcastle United director Amanda Staveley talks about why they overlooked Chelsea’s ownership. We all know how Chelsea was on sale since the Russia-Ukraine war.

Newcastle United director Amanda Staveley has revealed that the club’s investors turned down Chelsea because they weren’t keen on investing billions.

Staveley acquired the team from Mike Ashley along with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and RB Sports and Media.

Chelsea are now securely in the Boehly-Clearlake Capital period, but it is believed that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has spoken with a number of potential buyers.

Staveley claimed in a speech to the FT’s Business of Football conference that their investment in Newcastle was considerably more sensible. She said (h/t Evening Standard):

“We didn’t go for the wonderful Tottenham, Chelsea, or Liverpool because “why spend billions?”

When Chelsea were up for sale, it was one of the club’s darkest periods because several restrictions were placed on the club and Abramovich’s assets were frozen.

Meanwhile, Boehly has been impressive in his first year as owner. Mykhaylo Mudryk and Enzo Fernandez were signed in the winter transfer window. Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly arrived in the summer. It shows Chelsea went high in transfer windows. Boehly and co. have shown that they are not afraid to spend big and invest directly in the team.
