Xabi Alonso has not even officially started his Chelsea reign, but the incoming manager is already shaping the squad and one high-profile forward could pay the price.

Xabi Alonso Hasn’t Officially Started Yet – But He’s Already Pushing Liam Delap Out

The Spaniard will officially take over at Stamford Bridge on July 1st, replacing the sacked Liam Rosenior.

Although his arrival remains weeks away, the former Real Madrid boss has already begun discussing summer recruitment plans with the club’s hierarchy.

Alonso wants to bring in several new faces, with a traditional striker high on his list.

Reports suggest he is eyeing a new centre-forward, while Joao Pedro reportedly performs better in a deeper role and Emmanuel Emegha has already agreed to join from sister club Strasbourg.

However, any new signing up front could spell trouble for Liam Delap. The 22-year-old arrived from Ipswich Town just 12 months ago in a £30m deal, signing a six-year contract worth around £100,000 per week.

But he has managed only one goal this season and has struggled to adapt to the step up in quality.

Journalist Pete O’Rourke explained the situation to Football Insider:

“Chelsea, a lot will depend on if they’re bringing a new striker in the summer. That’d obviously push Delap down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge and might force the player to consider his options.”

Everton already shows interest in the forward, and a move away looks increasingly likely.

Delap needs regular game time to rebuild his confidence and scoring form something Chelsea cannot guarantee if Alonso brings in his preferred type of striker.

With Alonso favouring a different profile up front, staying would only limit Delap’s development.

His future at the club now appears bleak, and a summer departure would benefit all parties. The young striker must prioritise playing time over a lucrative contract.
