Former Ballon d’Or winner Luka Modric has backed Frank Lampard to improve Mateo Kovacic.
The Croatian captain who plays in midfield alongside compatriot Kovacic has backed the Chelsea boss to bring up the game of the Chelsea midfielder.
‘He was a bit obsessed about not scoring goals,’ Modric told The Times. ‘But I tell him to just relax and not think about it and that goal will come suddenly and it will open his account.
‘He just needs to think about how to help the team and impose his game on the pitch and if goals come it is a big plus, he does not need to be obsessed.’
Kovacic has scored two goals for Chelsea in his 98 games for the club.
‘It is normal for a midfielder to want to score goals, but now he has scored and in future hopefully he will score more, but hopefully it won’t take two years! I am sure it will not. ‘I think he can improve, and what is important for him is that he has a coach [Lampard] who was one of the best midfielders in England and under him he can grow even more.’
