Chelsea has made a number of changes in the last few weeks and months, especially in the goalkeeping position when Henrique Hilario left. Mark Mason revealed that after leaving Arsenal, he now serves as Chelsea’s assistant head of goalkeeping.
The coach left in February after joining the Gunners as their head of academy goalkeeping prior to the 2023–24 season. That position has been advertised by Arsenal since the end of last year, but it is no longer listed on their website, which indicates that “either the position was filled, or the ad has expired.”
Mason joins the Football Association three months after Henrique Hilario left to work with Thomas Tuchel, the new England head coach. Mason just posted on LinkedIn, saying, “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Assistant Head of Goalkeeping at Chelsea Football Club!” Ben Roberts is now in charge of global goalkeeping.
Chelsea to bolster their backroom staff by hiring Arsenal’s Mark Mason
In lieu of Henrique Hilario, who was added to Thomas Tuchel’s England staff at the end of the previous season, Mason takes James Russell’s place, who was promoted to the first team. Russell has nearly 16 years of Chelsea experience, and for the past two years, he has served as the Academy Goalkeeping Head.
After being named Head of Academy Goalkeeping in September 2023, Mason had joined Arsenal. Before that, he worked with Phil Neville at Inter Miami for over two years as the head of goalkeeping and set piece coach.
Additionally, he and Neville have collaborated on the England Women’s and England Men’s youth teams. Mason was a Brighton youth and first-team player from 2012 until 2016. Ben Roberts, the head of global goalkeeping at Chelsea, was brought in by Graham Potter but stayed under Enzo Maresca and Mauricio Pochettino.
Despite Potter’s recent appointment by West Ham, the Blues have maintained that he will remain with the team. After joining Chelsea with Maresca in the summer, Michele De Bernardin is now the team’s first goalie coach.
