Liam Rosenior revealed he made the bold call to drop goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for Chelsea’s crucial clash with Aston Villa based purely on a “gut feeling” he got during training.
‘I Saw Something in Training’ – Rosenior Reveals Why He Axed Sanchez
The Blues boss opted to bench the Spaniard for the trip to Villa Park on Wednesday night following Sanchez’s recent struggles.
The shot-stopper has faced heavy criticism for his performances and endured another difficult afternoon in the 2-1 defeat to Arsenal last weekend.
Rosenior handed Filip Jorgensen his Premier League start, and the decision paid off spectacularly.
Chelsea recovered from an early Douglas Luiz strike to thrash their top-four rivals 4-1, with Joao Pedro netting a hat-trick and Cole Palmer also on target.
The result lifts Chelsea back above Liverpool into fifth place, narrowing the gap to the Champions League places.
When asked about swapping his number one goalkeeper, Rosenior kept his explanation simple. He insisted Sanchez remains an “outstanding” talent, but the feeling during the week left him with no choice.
“Rob is an outstanding goalkeeper,” Rosenior explained.
“I just saw Filip in training and sometimes as a manager you have to go with your gut.
Filip gave us something different and they will both be fighting it out for the rest of the season.”
Rosenior praised his team’s response after falling behind early. He described the display as outstanding, highlighting their pressing, energy, and commitment.
He acknowledged the group has faced setbacks recently but stressed they responded in a positive way.
Match-winner Joao Pedro expressed his delight at securing his first Chelsea hat-trick. He called it a special night and credited his teammates for putting him in the right positions to score.
He admitted the team has dropped too many points at home this season but insisted they must now focus on performing consistently in every game.
Villa boss Unai Emery conceded his side were “dominated” by their rivals. He admitted Chelsea deserved the win and acknowledged his team is currently in a bad moment, stressing the need to find solutions and recover their confidence quickly.
