Liam Rosenior has launched a scathing attack on referee Paul Tierney following Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United, insisting the official’s focus on a pre-match huddle cost his side a “vital point” at Stamford Bridge.
“Do His Job Properly”: Rosenior Tears Into Referee Tierney After Costly Blunder
The Blues suffered their third loss in five Premier League games on Saturday, failing to break down a resilient Magpies defence despite dominating possession.
However, the narrow defeat was overshadowed by two controversial talking points involving the officiating team.
Rosenior revealed that Tierney had taken issue with Chelsea’s traditional pre-match huddle, where the players gather around the centre circle before kick-off.
According to the head coach, the referee questioned the ritual during discussions with his assistant prior to the match.
“I’m disappointed,” Rosenior told Sky Sports News.
“There is more focus on things that don’t matter. My players made the decision to show unity around the ball.
That huddle is not disrespectful to the opposition; it’s about leadership. If Paul had focused more on his job, which was to make the right decision, we have a penalty today.”
That penalty shout proved to be the primary source of Rosenior’s frustration. Deep into the second half, Cole Palmer appeared to be tripped by Newcastle’s Nick Woltemade inside the area. Despite strong protests from the home dugout, Tierney waved play on.
“I don’t think anybody can say Woltemade doesn’t kick Cole Palmer down in the box,” said Rosenior.
“Let’s focus on the things that are important. My team showing unity is not as important as getting the decisions right on the pitch.”
The defeat leaves Chelsea in fifth place, though they risk dropping to sixth if Liverpool beats Tottenham on Sunday.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe remained unfazed by the pre-match drama, stating that psychological displays have no bearing on the final result.
Nevertheless, the Blues are reportedly seeking official talks with the PGMOL. They want clarification on Tierney’s conduct regarding the huddle and an explanation for the missed penalty call, which Rosenior believes cost his team a deserved point.
