Chelsea have been dealt a major blow, with 22-year-old striker Liam Delap ruled out for six to eight weeks following a shoulder injury sustained in the club’s 0-0 draw against AFC Bournemouth.

In that match, Delap was forced off after just 32 minutes, visibly in pain and using his shirt as a makeshift sling as he left the pitch.

The injury a torn shoulder ligament — is believed to be serious, and manager Enzo Maresca conceded that “it looks quite bad.”

According to the latest timeline, Delap could be unavailable until mid-January or potentially early February.

That absence could see him miss as many as 13 matches — covering key fixtures in the UEFA Champions League (against Atalanta, Pafos FC and Napoli), as well as the EFL Cup quarter-final against Cardiff City.

The timing could hardly be worse for Delap and his club. This is the latest setback in a season already disrupted by injury: earlier in the year he missed two months due to a hamstring problem.

His limited output just 11 appearances and one goal so far in all competitions reflects how difficult it’s been to establish rhythm at the club since his £30 million move from Ipswich Town.

For Maresca and Chelsea FC, the immediate challenge will be reshaping the attack in Delap’s absence.

With other forwards also facing injury concerns or rotation pressure, the coming weeks will be a critical test of squad depth and creativity up front.
