Leipzig deny any contact with Chelsea over Werner deal

Well, football is a funny old game.

Until last week, it was pretty much accepted that Timo Werner was headed to Liverpool. In the last two days, it was switched around completely and we were more than confident, in fact, guaranteed by some that Werner was on his way to Chelsea.

Reports of a deal being struck, fees agreed with the player, how he was convinced to join was all taken out in fine print – not a loophole left in the story.

Well, none but one – there was no official confirmation.

Chelsea can still sign Werner of course but official news from the RB Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff has revealed that no contact has been made between Chelsea and the German club.

In fact, Mintzlaff has said that no club has approached them to sign Werner yet.

Speaking to Sky Sports Germany, he has said, “We haven’t had an exchange with Chelsea yet. So far, Timo Werner has not drawn the clause, nor has a club sent a transfer contract.

“We have nothing to report and do not take part in the daily speculation.”

Many, however, still feel as if the deal is on the edge since Chelsea has a rule in place that they only need to trigger the release clause in his contract and pay up that amount for Leipzig, who cannot stop the deal.

Shaky grounds again for Blues fans, sit tight and hope for the best.
