Earlier this week, an Italian report stated that Juventus gave Chelsea the opportunity to sign Federico Chiesa in exchange for Raheem Sterling. The club’s efforts to assemble a youthful roster full of future prospects have raised concerns about Sterling’s future at Stamford Bridge as he approaches his thirtieth birthday later this season.
He was left out of the match day squad for Sunday’s match against Manchester City, much to the surprise of his representatives. There have been tidings of disagreement between the two organisations over the player valuations. The deal is also complicated by the fact that Chiesa’s remuneration is approximately half that of Sterling.
Chelsea’s star handed shock transfer lifeline
A statement from the 29-year-old’s representatives stated they wanted “clarity” about his future role at the Blues, and shortly before kickoff, the player, who is paid £325,000 per week on a contract that expires in 2027, made headlines.
“Raheem Sterling is contracted to Chelsea Football Club for the next three years,” the statement stated. In order to perform individual training, he returned to England two weeks ahead of schedule. He has had a successful preseason under the new coach, with whom he has established a cordial working relationship.
Reports that Juventus is interested in the Englishman have prompted the decision to bench Sterling. The Italian team reportedly offered to include Federico Chiesa in a trade for Sterling because they were eager to get rid of the Italian international.
