Sevilla defender Jules Kounde remains the ‘number one’ transfer target for Chelsea ahead of the summer transfer window

When the market reopens, the Blues are anticipated to bolster their defence, while some existing alternatives are expected to leave the club as free agents.

After entering the last five months of their contracts, Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger, and Andreas Christensen may all walk out of the Stamford Bridge exit door.

With the highly rated center-backs’ contracts yet to be renewed, it appears manager Thomas Tuchel has already begun to consider who may fill their shoes.

Chelsea attempted to sign Kounde last summer but were unable to reach an agreement with Sevilla, who demanded that the European champions pay his £68.5 million release clause.

Kounde has established himself as one of Europe’s most promising defenders since joining the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium from his childhood club Bordeaux in 2019.

In that time, the France international has made 116 appearances for Sevilla, guiding them to successive top-four finishes in La Liga as well as the Europa League in his first season with the club.

When compared to his peers, the teenager has won 2.1 aerial duels and produced 2.7 clearances per league game while averaging 65.2 passes, putting him in the top three for each category.

If Chelsea can close this deal, they will undoubtedly add another top-tier center-back to their squad.
