John Obi Mikel has launched a scathing attack on Chelsea’s decision-makers, insisting the club made a “massive mistake” by sacking Enzo Maresca and replacing him with Liam Rosenior.

“We Went Five Steps Backwards” – John Obi Mikel Blasts Chelsea Over Maresca Sack

The former Chelsea midfielder didn’t hold back on his Obi One podcast, claiming the club have gone backwards since making the switch.

“We had Enzo Maresca. I’ve said it, I think it was a massive mistake to sack him,” Mikel said.

“I mean, it’s ridiculous. A manager that won us the Club World Cup, won us the Conference League, we had some sort of identity the way we played.”

Mikel believes Chelsea lost their way when they parted company with the Italian.

“We took a step forward, and we’ve gone five steps backwards,” he added.

“Liam has come in and he’s won games, but there is absolutely something that is missing. Something is not quite right.”

Rosenior has actually posted decent numbers since taking charge, with eight wins, two draws, and two losses from his 12 games at the helm.

But the manner of those results has raised eyebrows, particularly the two draws where Chelsea surrendered winning positions – something fans aren’t used to seeing.

The club decided to move on from Maresca after managing just one win in their final seven Premier League games. But behind-the-scenes issues played a bigger part in his departure.

Reports suggest Maresca clashed with owners over the medical team and the use of returning players. He also felt he lacked control over key decisions at the club.

Some believe Rosenior represented an easier option for the Chelsea hierarchy. Already on the payroll, they knew he wouldn’t cause headaches or demand too much control.

For Mikel, though, that doesn’t excuse what he sees as a backwards step for a club still searching for stability.
