Former Chelsea midfielder Joe Cole has told new manager Xabi Alonso to sign Robert Lewandowski on a free transfer this summer.
“Sign Lewandowski”: Joe Cole Sends Clear Transfer Message to Xabi Alonso
Alonso will take charge at Stamford Bridge in July after signing a four-year deal. The former Liverpool and Real Madrid star faces a major rebuild after Chelsea finished a disappointing tenth in the Premier League.
Cole believes the squad desperately needs experienced winners. He has named Lewandowski and Manchester City defender John Stones as ideal targets, with both players available for nothing.
Lewandowski left Barcelona after four prolific seasons, scoring 120 goals for the Catalan club.
The Polish striker still possesses elite finishing and could provide a focal point for Chelsea’s young attack.
Stones also became a free agent after ending his decade-long spell at Manchester City. The 31-year-old won six Premier League titles, six domestic cups and the Champions League at the Etihad.
“Bring in your John Stones and Robert Lewandowski on free transfers,” Cole told football.london.
“They don’t need to play every minute of every game, but they understand winning and culture. They can still help out on the pitch.”
Cole warned against wholesale changes, insisting Chelsea’s young players need experienced mentors around them.
“All the great teams are coached from within their own dressing room,” he added.
“Knowledge and wisdom pass down over the years. It baffles me how people don’t understand that.”
Lewandowski made only eight Premier League appearances this season due to injury, but that did not stop Thomas Tuchel from naming him in England’s World Cup squad.
Cole remains uncertain about Chelsea’s transfer budget under the new manager.
However, he stressed the importance of signing players who do not require guaranteed minutes but can shape the dressing room culture.
“If the owners have read the room, Chelsea will be better next year,” Cole said.
“If not, you will always hit the same ceilings. At elite level, you need experience, wisdom and quality.”
