Joe Cole admits he never wanted to leave Chelsea and still regrets his exit

Cole, who spent seven successful years at Chelsea, was a fan favourite and a key player during the club’s early Premier League triumphs.

However, a serious knee injury at a crucial time in contract negotiations changed the course of his career.

Speaking on The High Performance Podcast while promoting his new memoir Luxury Player, the ex-England international explained that Chelsea decided to pause discussions over a new deal after his injury, leaving him frustrated and feeling neglected.

“Rightly so, they pulled back,” Cole said.

“But they never contacted me after that. When I came back from injury, it had taken me 11 months, and I had less than a year left on my contract.

I was thinking, ‘Where were you when I was injured?’ and the negotiations just never got going from there.”

Cole admitted that pride and frustration played a part in his decision to walk away.

“My ego was bruised. I thought I deserved a new contract 18 months before, and when it didn’t come, I let my pride get in the way,” he said.

“Looking back now, I wish I had gone back to the table, even if it meant taking a pay cut. I was happy at Chelsea and never really wanted to go.”

After leaving Chelsea in 2010, Cole joined Liverpool but struggled to rediscover his best form. Injuries and inconsistency plagued the later years of his career.

Despite his regrets, Cole remains a respected figure among Chelsea supporters.

His story serves as a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in football — and how one difficult moment can alter the path of even the most talented players.
