Former Chelsea player and assistant coach Jody Morris has argued that Brentford’s late equalizer in Saturday’s 2–2 Premier League draw should have been disallowed due to an offside offense.
Chelsea Robbed? Jody Morris Highlights Offside in Brentford’s Leveler
The goal, scored by Fabio Carvalho in added time, denied Chelsea a victory after the Blues fought back from a 1–0 deficit to lead 2–1.
Morris pointed out that Brentford’s Dango Ouattara, who was in an offside position, actively attempted to play the ball following a flick-on from a long throw-in.
Although Ouattara did not make contact, Morris emphasized that his movement toward the ball interfered with play, which should have resulted in an offside call.
Morris stated, “Brentford player flicks it on, and the Brentford player in an offside position goes for the ball… doesn’t touch it but clearly goes for it… offside”.
The controversial goal overshadowed Chelsea’s second-half resurgence, which included brilliant strikes from Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo.
Despite Enzo Maresca’s side appearing to secure a dramatic win, the late concession cost them two points.
This incident adds to Chelsea’s early-season refereeing controversies.
The PGMOL recently apologized to Fulham after a disallowed goal in a previous match involving Trevoh Chalobah, and decisions in games against Crystal Palace and West Ham have also sparked debate.
While Maresca did not publicly criticize the officials after the match, Morris’s analysis has fueled discussions among fans and pundits regarding consistency in officiating.
Nonetheless, Chelsea will also reflect on their defensive vulnerability, as failing to clear a long throw-in ultimately led to Brentford’s equalizer.
The draw leaves Chelsea with mixed feelings as they prepare for their next fixture, aiming to convert strong performances into decisive results.
