This move marks the end of an 18-year tenure at Stamford Bridge for the 49-year-old former Portuguese international, who has been a beloved figure among players and fans alike.

Hilario, who joined Chelsea as a player in 2006 and later transitioned to a coaching role, has been integral to the club’s goalkeeping setup.

Known for his dedication and expertise, Hilario made 39 appearances for Chelsea and earned a cap for Portugal during his playing career.

His transition to coaching was seamless, and he quickly became a trusted member of the backroom staff.

Thomas Tuchel, who previously worked with Hilario at Chelsea, wasted no time in bringing him on board for his new project with England. Tuchel, keen on building a lean yet effective coaching team, saw Hilário as an essential addition.

With Martyn Margetson having left his position following Gareth Southgate’s departure, Tuchel moved swiftly to secure Hilario’s expertise.

The decision was met with reluctance from Chelsea, who were keen to retain Hilario. However, the club ultimately respected his desire to pursue this new opportunity.

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca expressed his gratitude for Hilario’s contributions but confirmed that the club would not immediately seek a replacement, given the robust goalkeeping support structure already in place.

Hilario’s departure marks a poignant end to his long association with Chelsea.

Reflecting on his time at the club, Hilario shared,

“Chelsea has been my home for nearly two decades. I’m grateful for every moment and every challenge we’ve faced together.

Moving on to join England’s national team under Thomas Tuchel is an exciting new chapter, and I’m eager to contribute to our future successes.”

As Hilario steps into his new role with England starting January 1, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the game.

His influence is expected to be significant as England prepares for upcoming international fixtures.

Meanwhile, Chelsea fans bid farewell to a stalwart of their coaching team, celebrating his contributions and wishing him success in his new endeavor.
