TalkSPORT pundit Gabriel Agbonlahor has strongly advised Chelsea left-back Ben Chilwell to seek regular football elsewhere by joining a lower-table Premier League club.
Agbonlahor: Chilwell Needs a Fresh Start at a Smaller Premier League Club
At 28 years old and out of favour at Stamford Bridge, Agbonlahor believes Chilwell deserves a team where he can be the undisputed starter.
Speaking on air, Agbonlahor pointed to Kyle Walker’s career path as a compelling example.
He noted that Walker joined Burnley early in his career, earned invaluable experience, and later returned stronger winning major honours at the highest level.
Agbonlahor remarked: “He needs to maybe go down to a lower club in the Premier League.
If it’s Leeds, if it’s Sunderland, if it’s Burnley, just play week in, week out. We’ve seen Kyle Walker… he’s gone to Burnley… I want to see Chilwell enjoy his football.”
He added that Crystal Palace was never suitable due to Tyrick Mitchell’s established status as the first-choice left‑back.
Chelsea reportedly value Chilwell at just £15 million this summer after deeming him surplus to requirements under manager Enzo Maresca.
Chilwell remains under contract until 2027, yet no offers have emerged so far. That leaves the player in limbo, according to pundits.
Chilwell joined Chelsea in 2020 from Leicester City and played a key role in the 2021 Champions League triumph. However, his recent struggles with form and fitness have limited his involvement.
Chelsea currently rely on Marc Cucurella, who has developed into one of the world’s leading left-backs since signing for around £60 million.
Agbonlahor’s message is clear: Chilwell should follow Walker’s adaptation strategy step down temporarily in competition level to rekindle his career, secure regular minutes, and rebuild confidence.
Only then can he reclaim top‑flight relevance and reignite his prospects.
