Frank Lampard revealed Reece James’ tactical profile as the starting right-back at Chelsea.
The 19-year-old impressed during Saturday’s 3-0 win over Burnley.
Lampard was voiced his admiration for Ross Barkley, who made his first Premier League start in months. “I speak a lot with Ross, I really like him and his character,” Lampard told reporters at Stamford Bridge. “He came to me a couple of weeks ago and he said to me that he’s just starting to feel good. It was a niggling injury and he’s just starting to feel released from it.
“Today was the performance we want out of Ross, it was so positive. You saw his quality on the ball. He can hit the right-foot ball, left-foot ball, take the ball well. He looked confident today.”
The Blues boss, however, also outlined just why James has been so good for Chelsea this season. “He’s a smart footballer. He takes up good positions high up the pitch at times and really wide,” Lampard explained.
“It was nice to see the combination between him and Callum today. It was a really dangerous one for Burnley today and we made good use of it.”
James is known for his offensive abilities at such an early age, making him a huge threat down the right flank. He is also improving at a steady rate with Cesar Azpilicueta as the right mentor to guide his defensive abilities.
