Joao Felix gave an update on his plans for the future at Chelsea, as he now appears more likely to remain in England than to return to Atletico Madrid
The Portugal international has been a regular first-team player in west London ever since joining the Blues from Los Rojiblancos on a brief loan in January.
Because of the young player’s early success in the Premier League, Chelsea is more than willing to spend £70 million to make his contract permanent in the summer. Felix recently expressed his desire to compete in the Champions League despite the Pensioners’ disastrous domestic campaign, but it appears that he has since altered his mind.
For Chelsea, securing Champions League football for the upcoming campaign is already a pipe fantasy as they currently sit in mid-table in the Premier League during one of their worst seasons in recent memory. Graham Potter’s team defeated Borussia Dortmund in the first round of the Champions League, giving them a different path to the top tournament in Europe.
The draw, however, did not favour the Pensioners, pairing them in a thrilling quarterfinal match with reigning champions and all-time victors Real Madrid. Given their poor performances at home, Chelsea will need to play at the top of their game to defeat Los Blancos and maintain their slim chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
Fortunately for them, Stamford Bridge has grown close to Felix’s heart, who continues to play every game for Potter despite having trouble scoring goals. The 23-year-old forward, who uses his nimble movement and exquisite technique to create spaces for himself and his teammates, has been a rare bright light in an otherwise underwhelming Chelsea frontline in 2023.
