Delap, who scored from the penalty spot to break the deadlock, showcased his growing reputation as one of England’s most promising young strikers.

The 21-year-old, signed from Manchester City for a deal worth up to £20 million over the summer, was lauded by both managers after the game for his all-round performance.

Maresca, who worked with Delap during his time as a coach at Manchester City, acknowledged the striker’s talent while expressing frustration over Chelsea’s missed chances.

“This is Liam,” Maresca said.

“I know him well from my time at City. He’s a fantastic player, and his work rate is incredible.

Probably, in some moments, we could have defended better, but congratulations to him and Ipswich. They were clinical tonight.”

Chelsea, who missed an opportunity to climb to second place in the Premier League table, struggled to convert their dominance into goals.

Maresca lamented his team’s wastefulness, calling the match “a bit of a strange game.”

“We created so many chances,” he said.

“In the first five or ten minutes of the second half, we had two clear opportunities—the header from Joao [Felix] and another shot—but sometimes the ball just doesn’t go in. The second goal from them killed the game.”

Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna was effusive in his praise for Delap, emphasizing the young striker’s rapid development.

“Liam was incredible tonight,” McKenna said.

“His improvement has been tremendous, and his style is unique. He’s proving himself against some of the best Premier League defenders every week.”

As rumors swirl about Chelsea’s potential interest in bringing Delap to Stamford Bridge, Maresca’s pre-match comments highlighted his belief in the striker’s bright future.

“Liam is a very good striker, and he has what it takes to be an important player for England,” Maresca said.

For Chelsea, the result will sting, but Maresca knows firsthand the challenge of containing a talent like Delap—a player who’s proving himself on one of the biggest stages.
