Atletico forward Joao Felix to take pay cut to complete Chelsea return

In a closely contested Premier League match at Villa Park on Saturday, Chelsea suffered a 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa, despite an early lead from Enzo Fernandez.

Enzo Maresca: “Pedro Neto Played Really Well” in Chelsea’s Loss to Villa

Blues head coach Enzo Maresca, however, found a silver lining in the performance of Pedro Neto, who was deployed as a center-forward for the first time in Chelsea colors.

Maresca’s tactical adjustments included positioning Reece James in midfield and assigning Neto to spearhead the attack.

This strategy paid early dividends when, in the ninth minute, Neto outmaneuvered former Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen on the flank and delivered a precise low cross.

Fernandez capitalized on this service, slotting the ball past Emiliano Martínez to give Chelsea the lead.

Throughout the match, Neto’s dynamic play was evident. He created four key chances, registered four shots, and had nine touches inside the opposition’s penalty area, showcasing his adaptability and threat in the central role.

Maresca, reflecting on Neto’s impact, remarked, “We created many chances. In the last two games, we struggled with that and lacked a threat.

Today, Pedro played really well, and we tried with him during the week. It works well with him. But we did not win, and we have to be upset.”

Despite Neto’s commendable performance, Chelsea faced challenges in maintaining their advantage.

Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, introduced Marcus Rashford at halftime, a move that shifted the momentum.

Rashford provided assists for both of Marco Asensio’s second-half goals, the latter resulting from a handling error by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jorgensen in the 89th minute, sealing the comeback for Villa.

This defeat underscores Chelsea’s ongoing struggles with consistency, particularly in converting early leads into victories.

While Neto’s performance offers a positive takeaway, Maresca and his squad will need to address these vulnerabilities as they prepare for upcoming fixtures.
