Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has revealed he excluded striker Marc Guiu from the team because of the player’s unsatisfactory attitude in training.
Chelsea boss Maresca drops Marc Guiu over poor training attitude
Maresca made this direct confession during a press conference ahead of his team’s match against Sunderland.
The manager explained that he held a frank discussion with Guiu approximately two weeks ago to address the issue.
Maresca stated he clearly told the young striker that he disapproved of his current training standards and that a change was necessary.
“We had a chat with Marc two weeks ago,” Maresca said.
“I told him that the way he was training I didn’t like and he needs to change. He changes and he got a chance, so it is like that.”
When pressed for specifics, the Chelsea boss indicated his dissatisfaction covered “all the ways” of Guiu’s efforts.
This incident is not Maresca’s first public call-out of a player’s training performance.
Just one year ago, he took similar action with winger Noni Madueke for comparable reasons.
This coaching method, while blunt, appears to have produced the intended result. Guiu’s improved application in training earned him his first start since returning from a loan spell in midweek.
However, Guiu’s window of opportunity may be short-lived. Maresca also provided a significant update on fellow striker Liam Delap, announcing his rapid recovery from a hamstring injury.
Delap could be available for selection as soon as next week, immediately increasing competition for the forward positions and putting pressure on Guiu to maintain his new-found standards.
