Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has firmly dismissed rumors of Christopher Nkunku’s potential departure in the January transfer window.
Maresca Declares Nkunku Not for Sale Amid Transfer Speculation
The French forward, who joined the Blues for £52 million, has been the subject of transfer speculation, with clubs like Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund reportedly showing interest. However, Maresca’s message is clear: Nkunku is staying put.
Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Conference League clash against Heidenheim, Maresca addressed the swirling rumors.
“I spoke to Christo days ago, and he did not say he was unhappy,” the manager said.
“Of course, he would like more minutes—like any player—but we have so many games coming up, especially in December.”
Nkunku, 27, has not started in the Premier League since Chelsea’s opening-day loss to Manchester City.
Instead, he’s been primarily featured in cup competitions, a decision that has sparked speculation about his satisfaction at Stamford Bridge.
Despite the limited starts, Maresca emphasized the depth of his squad and Nkunku’s integral role.
“For me, there is only one squad,” Maresca explained.
“Players can perform in the Premier League or the Conference League; they are all important.
Christo’s best position is between the lines as a No. 10, but Cole [Palmer] is playing there right now. They’re both fantastic players, and everyone will get opportunities.”
When pressed about Nkunku’s future, Maresca was unequivocal:
“Absolutely, yes, Christo is not for sale. I completely want him to stay with us. I have no intention of letting him leave in January.”
This strong stance underscores the manager’s faith in his squad’s versatility as Chelsea prepares for a hectic schedule.
Meanwhile, Chelsea welcomed academy talent Josh Acheampong back to first-team training after resolving a contract dispute, though he didn’t travel to Germany.
Captain Reece James remains sidelined, awaiting results from a hamstring scan, but Maresca stressed there’s “no rush” for his return.
With fixtures piling up, Maresca’s focus remains on unity and utilizing his squad’s depth. And for Christopher Nkunku, despite the speculation, his immediate future is undeniably in blue.
