Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Newcastle United, Maresca shared some frank insights on the current squad’s leadership needs, highlighting Cucurella’s influence on and off the pitch.

“Marc’s been exceptional,” Maresca noted, applauding Cucurella for both his Euro performances with Spain and his recent form with Chelsea.

Though Cucurella remains humble, often downplaying his role, Maresca sees the defender as one of the team’s emerging leaders, along with young Levi Colwill.

“We need more and more like him,” Maresca added, emphasizing that Cucurella’s energy, approachability, and impact are exactly what Chelsea needs to continue its upward trajectory.

Maresca didn’t shy away from addressing Chelsea’s leadership gaps either, specifically mentioning Reece James. While James is a critical talent, Maresca believes he still has room to grow as a leader.

“He’s a reserved guy, and you can see he’s not quite there yet,” Maresca admitted, “but leadership is something that can be developed.”

Cucurella’s personality and team-first attitude have won him admiration across the squad.

New teammate Joao Felix recently called him the funniest player at the club, while pundit Martin Keown has described him as a “vital” part of Chelsea’s style under Maresca.

Chelsea fans are noticing the spark Cucurella brings to the pitch and locker room alike.

As Maresca looks to build a squad of resilient leaders, Cucurella’s mix of grit and good humor seems like the blueprint.
