Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has expressed optimism about striker Nicolas Jackson’s recovery, indicating that the 23-year-old could return to action after the upcoming international break.
Injury Update: Nicolas Jackson and Madueke to Rejoin Chelsea Squad Soon
Jackson, who has been sidelined since early February due to a hamstring injury, has been greatly missed, with the team struggling to find the net in his absence.
In a recent press conference, Maresca provided a positive update on Jackson’s rehabilitation progress.
He mentioned that Jackson has resumed light training, stating, “Nico has started to do some running outside, which is good.”
However, he tempered expectations by adding, “But I don’t think there is any change with his status. We are still looking at after the international break for him [before returning].”
Jackson’s performance prior to his injury had been commendable, with nine goals and five assists in 23 Premier League appearances this season.
His dynamic presence on the field has been a significant asset for the Blues, and his absence has been felt keenly.
The team’s recent performances have highlighted the void left by Jackson.
In their latest match, a narrow 1-0 victory over Leicester City, Chelsea struggled to convert opportunities, with Marc Cucurella’s long-range effort being the sole differentiator.
The match also saw Cole Palmer miss a penalty, underscoring the team’s current challenges in front of goal.
Maresca also addressed the fitness of other key players. He confirmed that defender Wesley Fofana has returned to training and is available for selection, while midfielder Romeo Lavia has started working with the team but is not yet match-fit.
The manager emphasized the importance of patience with Lavia’s recovery, stating that he is “still quite far away from being 100 per cent fit and ready.”
Looking ahead, Chelsea faces Copenhagen in the second leg of their Conference League last 16 on Thursday, aiming to secure their place in the next round following a 2-1 win in the first leg.
This is followed by a crucial Premier League fixture against Arsenal before the international break.
The potential return of Jackson and other key players post-break could provide the necessary boost for the Blues as they approach the season’s final stretch.
Maresca’s cautious optimism reflects a strategic approach to player welfare, ensuring that returning players are fully fit to contribute effectively.
As the team navigates this challenging period, the anticipated return of Jackson and others offers hope for a strong finish to the season.
