Enzo Maresca says Ben Chilwell Could Leave Amid Manchester United Interest

Chelsea’s new manager, Enzo Maresca, has dropped a significant hint that Ben Chilwell might exit Stamford Bridge this summer following links to Manchester United.

Chilwell’s future at Chelsea appears uncertain under Maresca, who took over from Mauricio Pochettino earlier this summer. The 27-year-old defender, who joined Chelsea from Leicester City for £45 million in 2020, has faced persistent injury challenges, limiting his impact on the team.

During Chelsea’s pre-season tour, Maresca spoke candidly about Chilwell’s situation, describing it as “delicate.”

He expressed the need to find a suitable role for the England international, who missed out on Euro 2024 due to injury. This has raised questions about Chilwell’s position and potential adaptability under Maresca’s tactical system.

“Chilly is a left-back, for sure. I see him as a left full-back,” Maresca stated.

However, he acknowledged the ongoing process to determine the best position for Chilwell, hinting at a possible transition.

“We are trying to find a solution for him in terms of position. He probably needs a bit of time.”

Chilwell’s rival at Chelsea, Marc Cucurella, excelled in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, further complicating Chilwell’s prospects.

Despite these challenges, former Chelsea defender Wayne Bridge believes selling Chilwell would be a mistake, emphasizing his potential if he can stay fit.

“I’d look to keep him, but he just has to stay fit,” Bridge remarked.

“Ben has a lot of ability and is capable of proving himself, as long as he stays fit.”

As Chelsea prepares for their upcoming pre-season friendly against Club America, the future of Ben Chilwell remains a topic of intense speculation.

With Manchester United reportedly interested, the coming weeks could see significant developments in Chilwell’s career.
