In a decisive 8-0 victory over FC Noah in the Europa Conference League, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca made a surprising tactical decision by substituting Enzo Fernandez at half-time.
Chelsea Manager Maresca Discusses Fernandez’s Half-Time Substitution
Despite Fernandez’s stellar performance, where he notched up three assists within the first 20 minutes, Maresca chose to bring the Argentine off the field when Chelsea was comfortably leading 6-0 at the interval.
The 23-year-old Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica in January 2023 for a staggering fee of £106.8 million, has had a mixed journey at Stamford Bridge.
While his talent has never been in question, consistency and adapting to the Premier League’s rigors have been challenging at times. However, his recent performance against Noah showcased his immense potential and playmaking abilities.
When questioned about the half-time substitution, Maresca clarified, “He is okay. It was just a technical decision. No more about that. It was okay.”
The Italian manager emphasized that the decision was not influenced by any injury concerns but rather a strategic move to manage player workload and give opportunities to other squad members.
Maresca also used the match to introduce 18-year-old academy star Tyrique George, who was given his first start. “I think he was very good,” Maresca commented on George’s performance.
“With young players, sometimes it’s better to tell them the day before so they can prepare. With some of them, it’s better to tell them at the end so they don’t get nervous.
The plan with Tyrique was that he knew already he was going to start. I just told him two hours before the game. I think he was very good. Also, Sam Rak-Sakyi when he was inside was good.”
Reflecting on the overall team performance, Maresca praised his squad’s professionalism and dedication.
“The players once again showed how professional and serious they are. It is very easy to slip in these sorts of games. Football is full of surprises. I asked them to show how professional they are, and they showed that.”
The match also saw Marc Guiu, another promising talent, finding the net. “I’m very happy that Marc Guiu scored. He didn’t get many minutes with us this season but he’s working very hard,” added Maresca.
Chelsea fans will be encouraged by Fernandez’s brilliant display and the promising performances of their young talents.
Maresca’s strategic management and focus on player development highlight his commitment to building a versatile and resilient squad ready to tackle future challenges.
