Enzo Maresca has acknowledged that Chelsea lacks a natural leader and challenged Reece James to be more charismatic as captain. After a long injury layoff, the right-back made his Premier League debut last weekend in the team’s 2-1 loss to Liverpool. However, he was not included in the squad for Thursday’s 2-0 victory against Panathinaikos in Athens.

The 24-year-old has suffered from knee and hamstring problems for the last two seasons, but in August 2023, former manager Mauricio Pochettino named him club captain. During his trip to Anfield last Sunday, he stepped onto competitive ground for the first time in ten months. Although his resolute supporters hailed his crisp appearance, his new boss has wasted no time in ensuring that he doesn’t become complacent when he returns.

I expected more from him in terms of leadership – Maresca

Maresca has called on James to take charge and show more personality both on and off the field, acknowledging that the Blues lack a suitable leader. During their conversation, the former Leicester City manager stated, “I expected more from him in terms of leadership, inside the changing room, and for different kinds of things” (via The Telegraph): “He’s doing good. He is making strides, but I had higher expectations for Reece’s leadership as well.

“When they are captains, they typically believe that they have more because they are captains. I think you need to do more because you are the captain. Compared to others, you must provide more.
