Enzo Maresca has revealed that he didn’t want to let Raheem Sterling leave Chelsea this summer, despite the club’s decision to send him out on loan to Arsenal.
The Blues were forced to make some tough calls during the transfer window, given the bloated size of their squad.
Maresca Reveals Regret Over Sterling’s Loan Move to Arsenal
Sterling, one of the high-profile names affected, moved to Arsenal on a season-long loan after falling out of favor at Stamford Bridge.
Speaking on a TNT Sports feature before Chelsea’s clash with West Ham, Maresca opened up about Sterling’s departure.
“I want Raheem Sterling, but with 30 players in the squad, there’s simply no space for him,” Maresca admitted.
It was a tough situation for the Italian manager, as he described Sterling as an “unbelievable” player, but the competition for places was just too fierce.
Sterling’s time at Arsenal has been underwhelming so far. He’s made only two appearances for Mikel Arteta’s side, with the Englishman still finding his rhythm after the move.
Despite looking sharp in training, he has struggled to make an impact on the pitch, particularly in a disappointing outing against Tottenham Hotspur.
Sterling’s Chelsea future now hangs in the balance, with Maresca hinting that the door isn’t completely shut.
While the squad may not have room for him now, the 29-year-old will be eager to prove himself at Arsenal and perhaps fight his way back into Chelsea’s plans next season.
For now, all eyes will be on how he develops during his loan spell.
