The adaptable Portuguese who came close to joining Borussia Dortmund last summer, Renato Veiga, is now again being linked to a transfer. The agreement had been reached on personal terms, but it fell through before it was finalized. In a last-minute turn of events, Veiga instead signed with Chelsea, ruining Dortmund’s aspirations.
In order to increase squad depth, sources indicate that BVB may reconsider the notion of bringing him to Signal Iduna Park as the summer window approaches its pivotal point. Updates vary, though, with some reports claiming that no active conversations are underway.
Veiga was at Basel last year, and Dortmund was ahead. But after negotiations with his club came to a standstill, Chelsea was able to complete the deal in July 2024. Borussia Dortmund returned with a loan agreement in January 2025 that included a buyout option and full pay coverage.
However, Chelsea insisted that they would only approve a permanent deal for more than £20 million. Progress was hampered by the difference in stance, as Veiga himself sought a short-term loan to acquire minutes without finishing his Stamford Bridge story.
Borussia Dortmund considering Renato Veiga move
Veiga did not play for Chelsea in the Club World Cup and spent the second half of the season on loan at Juventus. The possibility of Veiga rejoining the first team squad was discussed once it was revealed that Levi Colwill had sustained an ACL injury.
That is extremely unlikely to occur, though, and according to reports, Chelsea is expected to sell Veiga before the window closes. Earlier this summer, Veiga’s transfer to Atletico Madrid fell through, and Bayern Munich has also been mentioned.
Saudi Arabian clubs are apparently interested in Veiga, but according to Sky Germany, Dortmund is once again taking the Portuguese into consideration. According to the source, Veiga and Dortmund had reached an agreement last summer, but he chose to sign with Chelsea instead. Dortmund reportedly considered a January deal for the defender.
Veiga, who made 18 appearances in all competitions during the first half of last season, is expected to fetch a hefty profit for Chelsea.
