Chelsea’s first January transfer announced as Derby County youngster Dylan Williams confirms Blues switch

Chelsea have finally made a move in the January transfer window, signing Derby County’s Dylan Williams. The Chelsea leadership appears to have been pleased by the teenager’s abilities, persuading them to make a bid for the Championship star.

Despite being a left-back, Williams is an intriguing young prospect who is noted for being versatile and energetic in attack. Despite being a member of the Rams’ academy, he was called up to the first squad and given senior debuts after a Covid outbreak at the club prompted Derby County to play their kids in an FA Cup fixture.

At the age of 16, Williams was the youngest player to start Derby County’s FA Cup Third Round clash at Chorley. The game, which occurred little over a year ago, also marked his professional football debut. The youngster has now progressed rapidly with the Rams, making the move up to the first-team and appearing in eight games across all competitions.

Derby County manager Wayne Rooney had previously hinted at a move for Williams, stating it was his decision to let go of the player and that he couldn’t deny a kid the chance to play in the Premier League.

Tuchel has been looking for a left-back to replace senior ace Ben Chilwell, who has been ruled out for the season due to injury. It would be an exaggeration to imply that Williams has been signed to fill in for Chilwell. It remains to be seen if Tuchel will put his trust in Williams if the scenario calls for it.
